More information about CBN

I have finally started posting the information about Cyprus Blog Network. Note the menu on the left with links to “About“, “How to join“, “How to link“, and “Why join?” pages. Those are still work in progress (what isn’t?), but I think they are good enough already for a general idea.

If notice any mistakes or have any questions or suggestions regarding those pages, please let me know either via comments to this post, or via the contact form.

Interview with Matt Mullenweg

Blogging Pro features an interview with Matthew Mullenweg. Matt is a founding developer of WordPress blogging software. You can read more about him at the About page of his blog. The interview is mostly about WordPress, Matt’s company Automattic, and blogging in general. Below are a few quotes that I particularly enjoyed.

About the fear of competition:

don’t take competition too seriously, you have to do your own thing and not focus on other projects

About GPL and Open Source:

I don’t consider any GPL software competition, because development on one piece of software can directly benefit another, and I will always promote other open source software whether it does the same thing as WordPress or not because at the end of the day we’re all really on the same team. I believe Open Source is the future.

More about competition:

if someone could take a product we wrote and do a better job with it then they deserve the success

Attitude towards Flickr and YouTube with some internal stats:

I think the success of services like Flickr and Youtube add to blogging, not take away from it. I’ll give you some private stats from inside WordPress.com.

On any given day, about 5% of the entries posted to WordPress.com contain a Flickr photo, and about 3% of the entries embed a Youtube video. We’re talking about tens of thousands of posts every week embedding Flickr or Youtube content, and I think that’s great.

About blogging:

Blogs serve as a personal aggregation point for people’s online activities. You might spread your junk all over the web, but most people like to bring it back together in someplace they own and can call their home, and for many that’s their blog.

There is more, so you better read the full interview with Matt.

Activating Session Restore in Firefox 2.0

Recently I posted about browsers, and, particularly, about recently released Mozilla Firefox 2.0. One of the new features of Firefox 2.0 is integrated Session Restore functionality - a system, which brings back all your browser windows, tabs, and unsaved text after a crash of the application.

It turns out, Session Restore needs to be properly activated. And, as it also turns out, it’s not that easy to find any documentation on how to do it. So, to save you some time and effort, here is the tip from Darin Marshall:

In Windows, go to Options > Main > When Firefox Starts and select Show my windows and tabs from last time. The default is normally Show my home page. What this does is, every time you close Firefox 2 with one or more tabs open, the same tabs are opened again the next time the application is launched. I absolutely love this feature. Your mileage may vary depending on your personal taste.

For Mac users, the instructions are just a tad bit different: Go to Firefox > Preferences > When Firefox starts and select the Show my windows and tabs from last time option from the pop-up.

Many thanks to Alexey Yudichev, who sent me the link.

Do you have any ideas for WordPress Firefox extension?

Photo Matt is asking for ideas for WordPress Firefox extension.  There is already plenty of interesting feedback in the comments.

For me personally, an easier way to manage multiple WordPress blogs could be a great time saver.  Currently, I have a bookmark folder, which contains links to all my blogs, links to their admin areas, links to their post writing forms, and things like these.  It works OK, but it’s not perfect.

One of the main issues with this system, is all the work I have to do.  First, I have to setup every link I need to every blog I post to.  It would be much easier to provide Firefox extension with the single link to the blog, so that it could create the additional ones itself (blog, admin area, write post, moderate comments, etc).

What do you - guys and gals - want to see in WordPress extension for Firefox?

What time is it?

Chances are - “What time is it?” - will be your most frequently asked and answered question for today, as Cyprus joins the rest of the daylight time saving world.  Here is what you need to do to follow:

  1. Adjust all your watches one hour back from current time.
  2. Make yourself a cup of coffee.
  3. Read through Daylight Saving Time at Wikipedia.
